One of the most important aspects of building a vicious flower is to think through how the petals affect the thought or meaning that underpins your emotional problem

A “vicious flower of panic" refers to a pattern where anxiety and panic feed into each other, creating a loop that can be difficult to break. Here's a formulation of how this cycle typically works:

  1. Trigger: An initial stressor or anxiety-provoking event occurs.

  2. Physical Symptoms: The body responds with physical symptoms such as increased heart rate, sweating, or shortness of breath.

  3. Misinterpretation: These physical symptoms are misinterpreted as signs of a serious problem, leading to increased anxiety.

  4. Escalation: The heightened anxiety causes more intense physical symptoms.

  5. Panic: The individual experiences a full-blown panic attack.

  6. Fear of Future Attacks: The fear of experiencing another panic attack leads to avoidance behaviours and heightened vigilance, which can trigger the cycle again.

Breaking this cycle often involves strategies such as:

  1. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT): This therapy helps you identify and change negative thought patterns that contribute to anxiety and panic. By challenging these thoughts, you can reduce the intensity of your panic attacks.

  2. Mindfulness: Practicing mindfulness involves staying present in the moment and observing your thoughts and feelings without judgment. This can help you become more aware of your anxiety triggers and manage them more effectively.

  3. Relaxation Techniques: Techniques such as deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and visualization can help calm your body and mind, reducing the physical symptoms of panic.

  4. Medication: In some cases, medication may be prescribed to help manage anxiety and panic attacks. It's important to consult with a healthcare professional to determine if this is the right option for you.

5.Understanding the Cycle: Recognising the stages of the panic cycle and how they feed into each other is the first step towards breaking it. By understanding the cycle, you can implement strategies to interrupt it and reduce the frequency and intensity of your panic attacks.

Summary

Key negative thoughts, attitudes or beliefs are at the heart of your vicious flower. The petals are your attentional, emotional, physical and behavioural responses to the meaning you have attached to the trigger: see illustration below.
